I suppose my “business career” started as far back as 1986.

That’s when I moved to Oregon with no job, no car and less than a hundred bucks in my pocket.

I was sleeping on my brother’s couch, the economy wasn’t exactly booming, and finding a job wasn’t going nearly as smoothly as I’d hoped.

To put it mildly, I was starting to get a little desperate.

Then I saw an ad for a job servicing a “jerky and meat snack route.”

I’d had a commercial driver’s license back in California, so I figured I was at least qualified to drive their van from store to store and put snacks on shelves or pegboards.

Sounded simple enough.

So I went to the interview.

And there were about 40 other guys there.

My heart sank.

I really needed a job, and I was pretty sure they weren’t hiring 40 people.

And if they were going to start eliminating applicants, I didn’t exactly like my chances.

I’d just moved to Oregon from California—which wasn’t necessarily something that made you everybody’s favorite person in Oregon back then—and I didn’t even have an Oregon driver’s license yet.

Still, I had nowhere better to be.

So I stuck around.

The owner, Jim Davis, came out carrying a canvas bag filled with jerky and other meat snacks.

He gave us his pitch.

And that’s when I discovered there was indeed plenty of jerky...

There just wasn’t any van.

There weren’t any store shelves to stock, either.

The canvas bag?

We were going to carry it.

And the “route”?

We were going to make that ourselves.

We’d walk into businesses, introduce ourselves to complete strangers and offer the owners and employees our meat snacks.

Plenty of those businesses had NO SOLICITING signs staring right back at us from the door.

Oh—and the job was 100% commission.

As they put it:

“You eat what you kill.”

Jim was enthusiastic about the whole thing.

Strangely enough, so were the other 39 guys.

Everybody nodded their heads.

Jim told us that anybody who was interested should come back the following day and we’d get started.

So we all left.

I left feeling a little dejected.

I still wasn’t entirely convinced I’d actually gotten a job.

But the next day I came back.

Mostly because I didn’t have anything better to do.

I walked into the same room.

Same owner.

Same canvas bags.

Same jerky and meat snacks.

There was just one thing missing.

The other 39 guys.

Out of roughly 40 people who’d shown up the day before...

I was the only one who came back.

Well...

I guess that moved me to the front of the line.

And that’s how my rather unusual business career got started.

And by the way...

See that old canvas bag in the picture?

That’s not like the bag I’m talking about.

That’s the bag.

The actual one.

Somehow I’ve hung onto it all these years.

Anyway, strange as that business may sound, it actually worked pretty well for me.

And eventually I learned something from selling those meat snacks that has stuck with me ever since.

When I walked into a business, I’d offer people a free sample.

At first glance, giving away a sample simply demonstrated that I had enough faith in what I was selling to let people try it.

But I came to realize it did something much more important.

It separated the people who might buy from the people who almost certainly wouldn’t.

Not everybody who accepted a free sample bought something.

Of course not.

But virtually everybody who refused a free sample wasn’t going to buy.

So I didn’t spend my time trying to talk them into becoming interested.

I’d thank them politely...

And move on.

That gave me more time and energy to spend talking to the people who had already demonstrated some interest in what I had to offer.

Simple?

Absolutely.

But after more than 20 years of seeing it work, I became a pretty firm believer in the principle.

Don’t spend all your time trying to manufacture interest.

Find the people who’ve already demonstrated it.

And that brings us to why you’re here.
